WINTER FORMAL

WINTER FORMAL

DEC 16

In a grand finale of our 2022 holiday season, Make Studio will be hosting the long-anticipated STUDIO WINTER FORMAL in our gallery!
Behold the gallery in full winter splendor, along with heaps of original artwork and gifts to finish your holiday shopping. Inspired by the idea of artist Louis Middleton, hatched in the dark, early days of the pandemic, to "have a dance party" to celebrate everyone coming back together, the Winter Formal will be a time to dress-to-impress, dance, pose for a fun photo, enjoy refreshments, vote on our esteemed Winter Court, and do some shopping at the same time.
Bring your friends, and glitter, sequins, puffed sleeves, schmaltz, nostalgia, and all your best dance moves are requested!

Imagined Futures

IMAGINED FUTURES

JUNE

"Imagined Futures" features works by Sharmila-Chuck Fisher and Katelynn Herty.

Both artists draw on images from the present, but create something shifted from our current reality. Sharmila-Chuck's joyful depictions of love without bounds and Katelynn's otherworldly yet familiar landscapes and animals are visions of where we could go next.

We will have extended gallery hours till 4PM on Saturday June 11th for Honfest. Stop by to see the work in-person, or follow along here as we share artwork details and thoughts from the artists over the next couple of weeks.

Art, Daddy-yo! - Michael Vita & a Tale of Two Workplaces

ART, DADDY-YO!

MAR 29 - APR 13

Mentions of trivia, tacos and “two Hunt Valley Blondes” (Michael’s BC beer of choice) often come up in conversation with Michael at the studio.  Michael has been a BC Brewery employee since 2018, sharing his BC stories, wearing his BC apparel with pride and including BC references in his artwork.

Now, Make Studio is excited to partner with BC Brewery to bring a selection of Michael’s artwork to the taproom walls! References to family and friends as well as pop culture icons like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Ghost Busters glow in candy colors in Michael’s compositions.

Michael’s work area at the studio is an array of art materials and gadgets: his phone, tablet, earbuds, and the latest tech all have a spot. This density of space mirrors the compositions in his artwork, and the items themselves are often represented in his drawings. Michael is also known to incite spontaneous soundtrack singalongs in the studio, just one example of the charisma and levity he brings to our artist community.

Storytellers

STORYTELLERS

APR 15 - MAY 14

ANIMATION VIDEO

With collaborative support provided by MICA France-Merrick Fellow Jood Farkouh and MICA’s Community Art and Service Program, a handful of Make Studio artists particularly interested in serialized artistic storytelling put together this fun, interactive show.

Featured artists Jules Hinmon, Zach Manuel, Dasha Kalumuck, and Louis Middleton, with contributions from other studio colleagues, play with the concepts of narrative, comic strips, story-within-a-story, and animation using a variety of media.

Artists' approaches to the theme include zine-style booklets, experiments with interactive animation, storyboarding, and capturing moments in time from ongoing imagined teleplays. As Jood put it, "...each of these artists has their own unique story to tell. This story could be told through metaphors, comedic and strategic representations, or even literal expressions, but no matter the format in which the story is told, these artists are sending a message through their work." Please plan to join the artists and friends on APRIL 30, from 12-2PM for a mid-run reception and free comics-based workshop in celebration of the show and Autism Acceptance Month. For us, this month is all about putting even more of a spotlight on building a truly neurodiverse community!
