Hailing originally from Kentucky, Sonya Beard currently lives at Casa Milagro in Santa Fe, NM. She has been making art and playing music since she was young and has always enjoyed gifting her art as a way of “spreading happiness” and to encourage that creative spark in others. She has taken various studio art classes and holds a degree in Desktop Publishing from Somerset Community College and a B.A. in Studio Art from Eastern Kentucky University. Sonya’s two favorite mediums are metal and watercolor. With watercolor she enjoys working in an experimental and intuitive way often starting with a wet-on-wet technique and seeing “where it goes and how it flows.” She loves creating images of galaxies, feathers, and abstract things. Sonya finds inspiration for her art in nature and based on “what I have seen in my life ” traveling around the world as a youth Christian missionary. When she isn’t making art, she is reading books on art techniques, writing songs, or playing one of the five instruments she knows. Art and music are important for Sonya because they support her in managing her mental health.
