Hannah Dougherty-Vona

My name is Hannah Dougherty-Vona. I am a freshman at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). I am chronically ill and disabled because of this. I have a constant migraine and have had to learn to function as “normally” as possible through this.

In my Forum 1 class, I was assigned making a sculpture that described a part of my identity. I chose my disability. I felt that I could use this sculpture to provide awareness of the pain people with invisible illness face on a daily basis, and what I face on a daily basis that people either just don’t understand or see. As I am chronically ill and disabled, it was hard for me to move this sculpture back and fourth and right now it is at my house in Maryland, not on campus.

I was wondering if there was an organization or museum or exhibition that would be willing to take this sculpture. It was a very thought out and detailed piece that has a deep meaning for the invisible disability community. I do not have a space that I could keep this nicely, and I would like to know that it is being used to provide the awareness intended for more than a class project. I feel it is very relatable to people like myself and it would help show others the challenges we face behind closed doors. I want it to be able to get out there to spread awareness. Because I am so passionate about this piece, and art in general, I looked up museums and exhibits that empower disabled artists and found Make Studio, which is right here in Baltimore!
